The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a report of a collision with serious injury that occurred on Interstate 16 near the Spring Street exit ramp. The collision took place at around 1:57p.m. on Monday, May 17, 2022.

It was initially reported to investigators that a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado got onto Interstate 16, headed in the wrong direction, from the Spring Street exit ramp.  Investigators determined through the course of the investigation that the Chevrolet truck, driven by Jenna Beth Scheidegger, did not enter the interstate from the Spring Street exit. Scheidegger made a “U-turn” on the interstate and began to head westbound in the eastbound lane. Scheidegger’s truck collided with a Chevrolet Malibu that was driven by 41-year-old John Jones, who was traveling east on Interstate 16.  

John Jones of Macon,  was transported to the Atrium Health Navicent by ambulance and was listed in critical condition.

According to Coroner Leon Jones, Mr. John Jones was pronounced deceased on Friday, June 3, 2022. The next of kin has been notified.

The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado, 41-year-old Jenna Beth Scheidegger of Dawsonville, Georgia, was reported to be uninjured. Scheidegger was transported to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, where she is being held without bond for the charges of Serious Injury by Motor Vehicle, Motor/Traffic Offense, Driving Under the Influence, and Willful Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers-misdemeanor. Traffic Investigators will be requesting that the charge of Serious Injury by Motor Vehicle be upgraded to Vehicular Homicide in the 1st degree.

Interstate 16 ,(east), was closed while law enforcement conducted an on scene investigation into this collision and it was reopened at around 3:30 p.m., on Monday.

This collision is still under investigation.
