Bibb County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call of a stolen vehicle being tracked at a location in the 2500 block of Emery Highway just after 10:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. As deputies were responding to the location, Sgt. Shane Howard spotted the vehicle, a 2002 Mazda Tribute, on Emery Highway near Indian Circle. Sgt. Howard attempted to make a traffic stop on the Mazda near Trinity Place once he got turned around. The driver of the Mazda refused to stop and led deputies on a chase which ended in the 900 block of Walnut Street. The driver struck 3 parked vehicles on Walnut Street and jumped out of the vehicle, fleeing on foot.
A lookout was immediately given out to other deputies in the area of Walnut Street. The driver of the Mazda, identified as 33 year old Jarvis Ottman was located and captured near Bond Street and Orange Street. He was transported to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigative Division for questioning. Ottman is charged with Theft by Receiving Stolen Property, Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer, Aggressive Driving and Criminal Damage to Property. Ottman also had outstanding warrants from an unrelated incident. He was transported to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center. Bond has not been set for Ottman at this time. A passenger in the vehicle, who was still in the vehicle when it wrecked, was detained and later released.
The Mazda Tribute had been reported stolen just before 4:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. The owner of the Mazda reported that he was at the SunTrust Bank at the corner of Cherry Street and Second Street and exited the vehicle, leaving it running while using the ATM outside. The suspect described as a skinny black male asked the male victim for a cigarette. The suspect then jumped into the Mazda and drove off.
