A Bibb County Sheriff’s Deputy was conducting a business check and speaking with an employee outside of “Late Night”, located at 420 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., at around 1:47 a.m. Sunday.

A male was seen running from the corner of Cherry Street, headed south on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. A short time later, a second male rounded the corner, brandishing a handgun. The armed male later identified as 29-year-old Benjamin Bivins shot a couple of rounds into the air as he was chasing the other male.

The Sheriff Deputy identified as, Deputy Jeremiah Moneypenny, attempted to make contact the with armed male and a foot pursuit ensued. According to bystanders, the individual shot at the deputy as they ran towards the alley located at Mulberry Street Lane.

Bivins was shot during the incident and was apprehended in the alley at Mulberry Street Lane. Bivins was transported to the hospital by ambulance and is listed to be in stable condition.

The deputy was not injured during the incident.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the shooting incident. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Internal Affairs Office will conduct an internal investigation. The deputy will be placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
