Bibb County Sheriff’s Patrol Deputies are investigating an accident that took place on Interstate- 475, at around 4:15a.m. Monday morning. It was reported that a tractor trailer, driven by 31- year- old Matt DeGrandchamp of Michigan was traveling south in the middle lane on I-475, near mile marker 1. A vehicle that was traveling in the right lane of I-475 south, in front of the tractor trailer, suddenly moved into the center lane. The tractor trailer swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid a collision with the vehicle. DeGrandchamp lost control of the tractor trailer and then hit the guardrail. The cab of the tractor trailer rode on top of the guardrail for approximately 200 feet before coming to a stop. When the tractor trailer came to a complete stop, the cab rolled over onto its driver’s side. The cab of the tractor trailer caught fire and DeGrandchamp had to crawl out of the passenger side to exit the cab. DeGrandchamp received minor injuries and was treated on scene by paramedics. No one else was injured during this accident.
The tractor trailer was hauling approximately 39,000 lbs. of paper products. Two lanes of travel remain open while cleanup efforts are taking place. There is no description available at this time of the vehicle that pulled into the path of the tractor trailer.
