On Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at around 9:45PM Bibb County Sheriff’s Deputy Sherrell was patrolling in the Rogers Avenue area when he heard multiple gun shots. The deputy drove towards the sound of the gunfire and found a large group of people at Neal Ave and Grier St leaving the area and running toward him. One person ran towards Roosevelt Avenue

This person was described as being a dark skinned black male, slim build, around 6’00’’ tall, wearing a white T-shirt, black ball cap, black pants, low cropped hair on the sides of his head and a short hair on the top of his head.

The deputy identified himself as a deputy sheriff and attempted to stop this person, who fled between two duplexes on Grier Street. The deputy pursued him in his vehicle as the suspects ran between duplexes toward Neal Avenue and to a wooded area at the end of Grier Street at Neal Avenue.

When the deputy was on Grier Street, closing in on the suspect, he got out of his vehicle to give chase on foot when he heard approximately three gunshots coming from the area where he last saw the suspect. The deputy took cover and called for backup. The deputy DID NOT return fire as he did not have the suspect in sight.

Deputies from District Three and from other districts arrived, including traffic units and available investigators, along with troopers from the Georgia State Patrol. All responding law enforcement surrounded the area and searched for the suspect.

A Department of Corrections Canine Officer also came on scene to assist in searching for the suspect with his dog.

The suspect was not apprehended but patrol deputies located a Chicago Bulls hat and a white T-Shirt that was possibly worn by suspect while he was fleeing. These items were collected as evidence. Deputies also found a white T-Shirt in the wood line on the opposite side of Neal Avenue

Crime scene investigators also recovered two shell casings in the area where the deputy got out of his vehicle to search for the suspect in the woods.

During this incident and while deputies were searching for the suspect, a vehicle drove down Grier Street from Roosevelt Avenue at a high rate of speed. Deputies stopped this vehicle and discovered there was an AR15 handgun and a 9mm handgun located on the front set of this vehicle. The driver of this vehicle, Vanterus Lenard Davis, was charged with possession of stolen property and possession of a firearm with altered serial numbers.

The suspect who fired shots at the deputy has not been identified or apprehended. The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the Bibb Sheriff’s Office at 478-751 -7500 and ask to leave a message for the on-call investigator or Macon Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
