It is with great sadness that Bibb Sheriff David Davis and the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office announces that Bibb County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Beko passed away, while hospitalized at the vet, on Sunday, January 21, 2018.

Beko became ill on Thursday, January 18, 2018 and was taken to the vet. Beko died of renal failure, caused by leptospirosis. Tissue samples have been sent for complete pathology. The area where Beko had resided is being sterilized and the rest of our K-9’s are being vaccinated for leptospirosis, as it can be passed from dog to dog in the urine. Deputies are looking into how Beko may have come into contact with this bacteria.

Beko was a Dutch Shepherd and has been with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office for over three years. Beko was assigned to Deputy Keith Mercer until his recent resignation.  Beko and Deputy Mercer were both assigned to the District 1 area, east Bibb County. They also assisted the Bibb Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit.  During this time Beko and Deputy Mercer were responsible for numerous significant narcotics seizures. Beko was residing with another handler, Deputy Kevin Irwin, pending reassignment.

Beko had a very successful and meaningful career and will be sorely missed by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office family. Beko was 6 years of age at the time of his passing.
