It’s Labor Day weekend and the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone to stay safe and buckle up if are traveling this weekend. Wearing a seat belt can prevent death and serious injury in a crash.  Also, please remember to have a designated driver or make plans ahead for alternative transportation (such as a taxi) if you plan to consume alcohol.

If you travelling out of town for the Labor Day Weekend, here are a few things to help keep your home safe while you are gone:

  • Have a trustworthy friend or family member watch your home while you are away.
  • Double check to make sure all your doors and windows are locked and set your alarm, if you have one.
  • Set your security lights on a timer. If you have someone coming by checking your home, ask them to turn different lights on and off to make it looks like someone is at home.
  • Stop your mail and paper so it doesn’t pile up outside or in your mailbox. Or have someone come by your home and collect it each day.
  •  Make sure vehicles left at home are locked and do not leave any valuables in the vehicle, especially if the vehicle is parked outside.
  • Do not share details of your vacation on social media sites. Turn off location services on your mobile devices, if you use any of the mobile apps. Wait to share your photos when you return. Remember, pictures taken with a GPS ready camera or phone may have your location embedded in it.
  • It’s a good idea to have an inventory of all your important items; list all serial numbers and take pictures for insurance purposes. It never hurts to be prepared.
  • If you are staying home, please be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. If you suspect someone is trying to break into a home, call the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office or your local law enforcement agency by dialing 911.
