Bibb County Sheriff’s Deputy Wilkes was dispatched to a call in the parking lot of Mabel White Baptist Church located at 1415 Bass Road Monday morning just after 10:15 a.m. The call came from the church and was in reference to a white female acting suspicious in the parking lot of the church. When the deputy arrived the female was pointed out by another female standing in front of the church. He made contact with the female in the driver’s seat of her vehicle. The deputy asked the female if she was okay and he got no response. She was acting strange and irrational. He asked her for her identification in an attempt to identify her and she rolled up her window and began driving away.

The deputy attempted to stop her as she was driving erratically onto Bass Road towards I-75. The female entered onto I-75 north. She continued driving erratically and ignoring the deputy’s blue lights and siren that were activated as he attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle continued northbound into Monroe County as GSP Corporal Burns came to assist Deputy Wilkes and became the primary vehicle attempting to stop the female’s vehicle with Deputy Wilkes as the secondary vehicle. Corporal Burns attempted a PIT maneuver on the female’s vehicle. She regained control and continued northbound. She finally stopped near Exit 184 and jumped out of the vehicle. Corporal Burns tased the female after she ran from the vehicle. Deputy Wilkes and Corporal Burns placed the female into custody after a brief struggle and resistance.

The female was identified as 44 year old Gwendolyn Powell of Forsyth Georgia. Powell was transported to the Navicent Health Hospital where she was checked and released. Deputy Wilkes transported Powell to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center and charged her with Aggressive Driving, Fleeing and Attempting to Elude Law Enforcement Officers and Willful Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers.
