A Bibb County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a call of shoplifting at the Family Dollar Store located at 2529 Houston Avenue just before 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon. It was reported that the deputy located a man fitting the description of the suspect on Colquitt Street.

The deputy got out with the suspect and at some point a physical struggle occurred with the suspect. The deputy deployed his Taser and the struggle continued. During the struggle the suspect grabbed the deputy’s pepper spray and sprayed the deputy in the face. With the deputy being sprayed and the struggle continuing, the deputy drew his firearm and fired at the suspect striking him. The suspect died from the gunshot wound at the scene. The identity of the male will be released once next of kin has been notified. The deputy involved in the shooting is Deputy Greg Ussery. Deputy Ussery was a Macon Police Officer before consolidation and becoming a Bibb County Sheriff’s Deputy. He has a total of 12 years in law enforcement.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the shooting incident. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Internal Affairs Office will conduct an internal investigation. Deputy Ussery will be placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
