Bibb County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call this morning just before 10:00AM at Kevin’s Check Cashing located at 3989 Pionono Avenue. It was reported that a black male subject had attempted to cash a check that was not valid. Recognizing him as the same man that came in the day before to cash a check, the owner of the business tried to keep the man at the business until he could notify the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect ran from the business and the owner attempted to chase the suspect, but lost sight of him a few blocks away. Deputies searched the area but did not locate the suspect.
The man had left his identification at the business as he was fleeing. Deputies went to the address listed on the identification which was in South Macon in attempts to locate the suspect. As deputies were checking the address, they spotted a vehicle, later identified as a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier leaving the area at a high rate of speed. As deputies attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle the driver refused to stop. Deputies chased the vehicle for several minutes with the pursuit ending on I-75 North near the Walnut Street overpass. The vehicle spun out hitting the median and striking two Bibb County Sheriff’s Patrol vehicles. The suspect jumped out of the vehicle and ran from the scene. Deputies chased the suspect through a wooded area of the interstate and lost sight of him.
Deputies discovered two passengers inside the vehicle. One was an adult male identified as Traviors Whisby and the other was a 1 year female identified as Jordenn Drewery . Paramedics were called to the scene to check Whisby and Drewery, as well as the deputies that sustained minor injuries from the collision and one deputy that was injured chasing the suspect after the collision. All with the exception of Whisby were taken to the Medical Center Navicent Health to be treated. Whisby was treated at the scene.
During the investigation it was discovered that the driver of the vehicle was 17 year old Elijah Simmons of Macon. It was not clear at the time why Simmons refused to stop for deputies. Simmons later turned himself into Bibb County Sheriff’s Deputies and is being interviewed at this time. Simmons did not have anything to do with the initial incident that occurred at the check cashing business.
Elijah Simmons was arrested and charged with Fleeing and Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer, Aggressive Driving and Cruelty to Children. He was transported to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center. Simmons has a bond of $10,400.00.
