Bibb County Sheriff’s Deputies answered a call of animal cruelty at 3331 Kings Park Circle just after 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Deputies met with Macon-Bibb Animal Welfare Director Adams. It was reported to her that a couple of workers doing some construction in the area heard some gunshots. Immediately after the gunshots they saw a pig running down the road with what was later found to be a pickaxe in the animal’s back. A black male, later identified as 62 year old Freddie Phelps Sr., was chasing after the pig. During the initial investigation it was discovered that Phelps also struck the pig with another object and shot it according to Adams. Phelps was asked by the pig’s owner to kill the pig so she could have it processed.

The pig was found behind 3341 Kings Park Circle. Adams asked that the pig be put down due to the severity of its injuries. A Bibb County Sheriff’s Deputy shot the animal to end its painful suffering. Phelps was placed under arrest and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals. He was transported to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center where he remains until bond is set by a judge. The pig was taken to Animal Welfare to have a necropsy performed.

This incident continues to be under investigation. Anyone with information in reference to this incident is urged to contact the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751 -7500.
