The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accident involving two “Medixx” ambulances that took place on Interstate 16 at around 4:12a.m. Tuesday morning. The two ambulances are out of Soperton, Georgia. It was reported that the ambulances were following each other in the far right lane of Interstate 16 (east) when the accident occurred. Paramedic Michael Hanner, who was driving the second ambulance, stated that he was feeling ill and blacked out when his ambulance struck the ambulance that he was following. Hanner’s ambulance caught on fire. Hanner escaped the burning ambulance with the assistance of Paramedic John Cleaves, who was driving the first ambulance. Both paramedics were taken to a local hospital for complaints. They are listed to be in stable condition. The two paramedics were the only ones in the ambulances and no one else was injured during this accident.
The accident scene was cleared from the roadway at around 5:10a.m.
