On February 19, 2020, at 8:25 p.m. Bibb County Sheriff’s Office deputies were patrolling the area of Riverside Drive and Spring Street when they witnessed a motorist driving a moped on the sidewalk.

Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and made contact with the driver. The driver gave deputies a false name at first, and then finally gave his correct name of, 32-year-old Adam Obinna Mathis, of Macon. While talking to Mathis he attempted to drive off, but deputies were able to stop him. After a short struggle deputies, tased Mathis and were able to handcuff him. During the struggle, a Ruger, .380 pistol fell out of his coat sleeve. It was determined that the gun was reported stolen out of Bibb County in 2019. Deputies also located a .357 Magnum revolver and some Methamphetamine.

Mathis was taken to the Bibb County Jail and charged with Possession of Schedule I Controlled Substance, two counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, two counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Willful Obstruction of a Peace Officer, Theft by Receiving Stolen Property, Giving False Name to Law Enforcement, Driving While License Suspended or Revoked and Driving on Sidewalk. He is being held without bond at this time.
