The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office makes an arrest in an Aggravated Assault incident that occurred just before 9:00 a.m., near the intersection of Brookdale Avenue and Short Street.

It was reported that 30-year-old William Cecil Smith and 40-year-old Jerome Dewayne Hewett were arguing outside a home when Hewett shot Smith once in the hip and then ran away from the scene.  When deputies arrived at the scene they were advised that Hewett may have ran into a house, but was not sure of which location.

Once Hewett was verified as being inside of 104 Green Street, negotiators with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office were notified and came out to speak with Hewett.  Hewett declined all communication with negotiators and continued to refuse to come out of the house. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office S.W.A.T. Team was then contacted and responded to the location.

Negotiators continued to attempt contact with Hewett and he continued to refuse to speak with negotiators. After one hour of attempted negotiations, the SW.A.T. Team made entry into the house and Hewett attempted to run out a side door and was apprehended by patrol deputies. Hewett was transported to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center and charged with Aggravated Assault.

Smith was transported to the Navicent Health Medical Center by ambulance and is listed in stable condition. No one else was injured during this incident.
